This is the fourth installment of the mini-series Sampled to the Soul. Since the 1940s, when French musique concrète artists first experimented with tape loops, artists have built new compositions from existing recordings. But it was the arrival of the MPC sampler that pushed sampling into the cultural spotlight. In the 1980s and ’90s, hip-hop and electronic musicians like DJ Shadow (Endtroducing) and the Beastie Boys (Paul’s Boutique) revealed the sampler’s creative potential. That momentum slowed after a wave of high-profile copyright lawsuits. Yet despite the legal and financial hurdles, sampling remains a vital force in contemporary music.
