HOUR TWO:
This mix is a tribute to THING Magazine, which was originally published from 1989 to 1993 and was recently reissued as an anthology by Primary Information. For the track selection I went through every music section and playlist featured in the magazine, pulling together a combination of house classics and tracks that were new to me. Metacuration, baby. I think the overall blend captures some of THING’s legacy, tho you could make 100 more mixes out of these playlists that sound completely different.

From the publisher: “Started in 1989 by designer and writer Robert Ford, THING magazine was the voice of the Queer Black music and art scene in the early 1990s. Ford and his editors were part of the burgeoning House music scene, which originated in Chicago’s Queer underground, and some of the top DJs and musicians from that time were featured in the magazine, including Frankie Knuckles, Gemini, Larry Heard, Rupaul, and Deee-Lite. THING published ten issues from 1989-1993, before it was cut short by Ford’s death from AIDS-related illness.”

Essential reading If you’re in any way interested in dance music! Each issue has an extensive music section featuring vivid album and party reviews, and playlists with names like “House Top 10” or “All Time Classic Downtempo Summer Disco” curated by local DJs.
